degree

LM-32 - Computer systems engineering

The University of Pisa, founded in 1343, has a solid international reputation. According to the latest edition of the Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU) 2022, the University of Pisa is ranked between 151st and 200th in the world and is 4th in Italy. According to the QS World University Ranking 2022, the University of Pisa is 388th in the world and 7th in Italy.

The Master’s degree provides in-depth training that enables graduates to design and implement, on the one hand, systems for the efficient management of large amounts of data and the extraction of useful knowledge from these data and, on the other hand, intelligent systems exploiting artificial intelligence techniques. The Master’s programme advances the students’ portfolio of knowledge, both in IT infrastructures for intensive data management and in methods for data analysis and artificial intelligence. These skills enable graduates to interact with professionals from different backgrounds in different domains and contexts, where data processing is required, as well as to complete their mastery of computer engineering.

The course is structured to accommodate not only students with a solid background in computer engineering, but also students from different disciplines with at least an adequate knowledge of programming languages.

Graduates in computer engineering will have the opportunity to deepen their knowledge of engineering and methodological disciplines; graduates in other disciplines will complement their knowledge of basic computer engineering methodologies, including operating systems, computer networks, databases, algorithms and advanced programming.

Therefore, all students are introduced to the following subjects: optimisation techniques and game theory, business processes and entrepreneurship, non-relational databases, distributed databases, query optimisation, data warehouses, cloud computing and infrastructure, multimedia information management, data mining and machine learning, computational intelligence and deep learning, process mining and intelligence, symbolic artificial intelligence, evolutionary intelligence and swarming.

Each course is characterised by lectures and workshops, with a focus on today’s applications that require efficient processing of big data.

Please note: the Master’s degree course in Artificial Intelligence and Data Engineering is predominantly in English.
